U-14

Congratulations to our U-14s who won the recent 7-a-side competition in the Kingspan Breffni 3G pitch. Castletara won their group, containing teams from Lacken, Maghera and Drumlane, in convincing fashion before meeting a very strong Ramor Utd team in the final. In a highly entertaining affair Castletara clawed back a big deficit to clinch victory in the final seconds of the match. Well done to the team and management on this famous result.

Ballyhaise Club Notes 12/7/10

Seniors

Ballyhaise claimed their place at the top of Division Two with an eight point victory over Drumlane on Thursday night. Much of the hard work was done in the first half as Ballyhaise led by ten points at the break. Well taken goals by Eamonn Costello and Colm Reilly were crucial in establishing such a commanding lead. Drumlane rallied a little in the second half and a goal by Barry Corrigan gave them some hope of a comeback but Ballyhaise were still very much in control and fully deserved their win.  See report below.  Congratulations to manager Barry Tierney and the team on a wonderful league campaign which included eleven wins in a row. Good luck to the team and management in the intermediate championship which begins on Saturday July 25th with a match against Butlersbridge in Breffni Park.

Reserves

Congratulations also to the Division Two Reserve team who gained promotion and topped the table with a victory over Bailieborough on Wednesday night. The game, which was played in Bailieborough, was a close affair with just one point between the teams at the end. Final score: Bailieborough 1-7 Ballyhaise 0-11. The Division Three Reserve team also had a good result on Friday night with a draw against near neighbours Laragh Utd to confirm their place in the top four. Final Score: Laragh 0-11 Ballyhaise 1-8.

All-Ireland Feile

The Castletara U-14 team did the club proud with a very fine performance at the recent All-Ireland Feile competition in Derry. The team, their mentors and parents had a very enjoyable trip overall. They won their first two games and were very unfortunate to lose out narrowly in the third. They did, however, receive great praise for their skill and effort. They were also excellently behaved and will look forward to keeping up the friendships made over the weekend. Great credit must go to the mentors and coaches who ensured that all arrangements were in place for this successful trip. Bellaghy were the host club and they have been invited to Ballyhaise for a return game.

ACFL Division Two: Ballyhaise 2-11 Drumlane 1-6

Ballyhaise and Drumlane, who between them had only lost two games in Division Two all season, met head to head in the final round of the league in Annalee Park on Thursday night. With both teams missing key players and both already promoted to Division One there was little to play for except, perhaps, the honour of topping the table. The game never reached a competitive level as Ballyhaise dominated throughout and once again their solid defence provided the bedrock for success.

A fast and lively start by Ballyhaise has been a feature of many of their games this year and this match was no exception. Ahead by four points after seven minutes the home team seemed intent on settling the issue quickly. Stephen Smith scored two points from frees in the first and seventh minute and in between those scores Eamonn Costello and Kevin Tierney added two fine points from play. Drumlane got off the mark when Stephen McCann scored a great point from forty yards in the eight minute. They were dealt a serious blow, however, less than a minute later when Don Gorby and Colm Reilly combined well to send Eamonn Costello through on goal. Costello made no mistake and buried the ball in the back of the net.

Kevin Tierney and Colm Reilly added two points from play before Drumlane notched their second from a Barry Corrigan free kick in the eighteenth minute. They added another three minutes later when a free dropped short into the hands of Darragh Seagrave who turned quickly on the edge of the square to slot the ball over the bar. Any chance of a revival by the visitors was quickly snuffed out, however, with just twenty three minutes gone. The ball was smoothly transferred up field by the home defence to Eamonn Costello who had moved into space on the right wing. Costello played a fantastic pass into the path of the fast moving Colm Reilly on the edge of the square who unleashed a powerful shot into the roof of the net. Stephen Smith converted a free just before the half-time whistle to leave a ten point gap between the sides at the break.

The second half was a more evenly contested affair but the pace had dropped significantly and a couple of injuries and needless fouls broke up the continuity of the play. Barry McCrudden soloed through from midfield to grab the first score of the half in the thirty fourth minute. Stephen McCann responded with a converted free shortly after before the game entered a ten minute spell without any score. Stephen Smith and McCann exchanged scores from frees to break the mini deadlock in the forty eight minute.

A bizarre goal almost brought Drumlane back into the game as it entered its final ten minutes. Barry Corrigan took a free from forty five metres out and the ball bounced in the small square. The home defence were caught flat footed as no one intercepted the ball and it hopped over the goal line. Ballyhaise responded well, however, and stretched the lead to nine again in the space of four minutes. Midfielder Barry McCrudden scored his second point of the evening after good work by Brendan Lyons put him within range of the posts and Barry Kelly kicked a magnificent score from a forty five with just two minutes left on the clock. Drumlane’s Stephen McCann rounded off the scoring with a consolation point from a free as the game entered injury time.

Ballyhaise: Brendan Maguire, Brendan Lyons, Sean McCormack, Mark Brennan, Adrian O’Rourke, Michael Rooney, Barry Kelly (0-1,1f), Barry McCrudden (0-2), Donal Farrelly, Kevin Tierney (0-2), Colm Reilly (1-1), Niall Costello, Don Gorby, Eamonn Costello (1-1), Stephen Smith (0-4,4f). Subs used: Christopher Reilly, Adam Boyle, David Duggan, John Fay.

Drumlane: Darren Murphy, Cormac Fitzpatrick, John O’Dowd, Niall McCann, Sean Duignan, Glen Fitzpatrick, Brendan Reilly, Paul Kelly, Barry Corrigan (1-1,1f), John Fitzpatrick, Stephen McCann (0-4,3f), Gareth Corrigan, Darragh Seagrave (0-1), Fergal Brady, Barry Cunningham. Subs Used: J.P. Kelly, Gary Tubman, Pauric Leddy.

29-06-10

Seniors

The next senior match is on Friday evening against Bailieborough in Bailieborough at 8pm.

Reserves

The Ballyhaise Division Three reserve team defeated Mountnugent last Wednesday night in Annalee Park. The final score was Ballyhaise 2-6 Mountnugent 1-5. Their next outing is against Swanlinbar on Sunday (July 4th) at 12 noon in Annalee Park and the Division Two reserve team play Bailiborough on Wednesday (July 7th) at 8pm in St. Anne’s Park.

Social Football

Thankfully the many months of hard training have payed off and have been rewarded with a victory on the biggest stage possible. Ballyhaise’s social footballers defeated Ramor Utd, 2-7 to 1-3, in front of 17,000 supporters at Breffni Park on Sunday afternoon in an exhibition match during the interval of the Ulster Championship semi-final. Social football is for over 35’s, can involve teams of between 3 and 15 players a-side and is a non contact sport. Each team must include at least three women. A number of blitzes have been held on the 3G pitch in Breffni so far this year and more will be played in the future. Contact Mark O’Rourke for more details. The heroic Ballyhaise team on Sunday included John ‘Scotchie’ McKiernan, Adrian McKiernan, Mark O’Rourke, Fr. Michael Router, Eamonn Reilly and Colm McBreen. Unfortunately the female players of Ballyhaise were unable to show off their skills before such a large crowd so thanks to the three women from Ramor who helped out – Laura, Margaret and Louise.

Ballyhaise Club Notes

21 June 2010

Seniors
Congratulations to the senior players and to manager Barry Tierney and his selectors who over the weekend secured promotion from Division Two and who next year will play their football in Division One. The combination of victory over Butlersbridge on Saturday night and defeat for Knockbride on Sunday saw the men in green and gold go up after just two seasons in the second tier. The win against neighbours Butlersbridge was comfortable but the game never sparked into life as both teams misfired in front of goal, particularly in the second half. However a win is a win and the fact that it is the ninth win in a row for Ballyhaise is a cause for celebration and some optimism as attention turns to the intermediate championship.

Reserves
The Reserve Division Two team also had a comfortable win over Butlersbridge on Saturday evening to cement their place at the top of Division 2A. The final score was Ballyhaise 3-11 Butlersbridge 1-3. Hopefully two league titles will be captured over the coming months in what has so far been a very encouraging year for the club. The Division Three Reserve team play Montnugent on Wednesday evening at 8pm in Annalee Park.

Seniors

The senior team continued their winning ways with a good victory over Cavan Gaels in Terry Coyle Park on Sunday. Ray Cullivan made a significant contribution to the result scoring 1-5. This win keeps Ballyhaise second in Division Two and in with a good chance of promotion with just three matches left in their league campaign. The final score was Cavan Gaels 1-8 Ballyhaise 2-11.

Reserves

The Reserve Division Three team had a setback in their quest for league honours at the weekend. Shannon Gaels were the visitors to Annalee Park on Friday night and after a closely contested match they made the long journey home with the two points. Seniors

The senior team had another fine victory on Friday night against Drumgoon. They dominated the game from start to finish and were never in any danger of losing. The only negative in the game was an eighteen minute scoreless period in the second half but fortunately Drumgoon were unable to capitalise on this lapse. One of the most heartening aspects of this year’s campaign is the introduction of some young players who are making a real contribution to the team. Chief amongst these are Donal McGoldrick and Christopher Reilly who have established their places on the team with some very solid performances. Both were in flying form last Friday night. Other young players who have been regular substitutes such as David Duggan, Neal Rooney, Aiden Moran and Adam Boyle are pushing hard for places and of course there are other young players who have become regulars over the past few years such as Kevin Tierney, Mark Brennan, Niall Costello and Shane Briody. All of these players are hard workers with a great attitude and they are providing much cause for hope among the supporters of Ballyhaise football.

Reserves

The Reserve Division Two team also had a great win on Saturday evening when they hammered Drumgoon 4-15 to 0-7 to maintain their lead at the top of Division 2A.

Ballyhaise Club Notes 30/5/10

County Minors

Congratulations to Aidan Moran and the rest of the county minor team who had a fine victory over Fermanagh in the first round of the Ulster championship on Sunday evening last. Aidan did Ballyhaise proud with a fantastic performance at right corner back. Cool and calm under pressure he never put a foot wrong and distributed the ball with great accuracy throughout. Aidan showed he has all the talents necessary for the modern game when he scored a great point from play in the first half on one of his many attacking forays. Shane McKiernan from Ballyhaise was also a member of the panel. Dogged by injury all year we hope he will be challenging for a starting place soon.

There was Mass in Castletara on Friday night followed by presentations in the School to show the communities appreciation for Fr Router who has recently moved to St Patricks College to take up his new position of running the Pastoral Centre.  Presentations were made by various groups.  There was a small presentation from the GAA club made by Chairman Philip Rooney and Secretary JC Brady.  Fr Michael will be greatly missed from the parish but we wish him well in his new role.  Thankfully, Fr Michael will remain with the club.  He is a current selector with the Minor team and club PRO where he is doing an excellent job and was well worthy of the 'PRO of the year' award he received at the GAA media awards.

La na gClub

La na gClub was celebrated in the parish last Sunday. A large crowd wearing the colours of Ballyhaise GFC and Castletara Camogie Club attended Mass in Ballyhaise at 11.30am. The Mass was offered for the deceased members of both clubs. This was followed by a parade to Annalee Park , led by piper Sean Kelly, where a number of under age blitz competitions took place. Thankfully the weather was very good again this year and all the participants and their supporters enjoyed the day.

Seniors

The senior team made the trip to east Cavan to play Shercock in the league on Saturday afternoon. Ballyhaise chalked up win number four in this campaign with a good performance in a hard hitting encounter. The final score was Ballyhaise 2-9 Shercock 1-7.

Reserves

The Division Two reserve team played Shercock on Saturday and completed the double over the home team by winning comfortably 2-13 to 1-5. The Division Three reserve team made the journey to Munterconnaught on Friday evening only to discover that the game had been postponed due the home teams involvement in the Division Three Minor League final. However, no one had informed the club!

U-16

The U-16 play their next game on Tuesday May 11th at home to Scarvy Gaels at 7.30pm.

Ballyhaise Club Notes

04 May 2010

La na gClub
Next Sunday, May 9th, is La na gClub, a special day to celebrate the role of the GAA in the local community. Mass in Ballyhaise at 11.30am will be offered for the deceased members of the Ballyhaise GAA club. This will be followed by a parade to Annalee Park where a number of under age blitz competitions will take place. All club members are encouraged to wear their club colours to Mass.

Ladies
The senior ladies team were defeated in their second league game on Saturday.
Training continues on Tuesdays and Fridays at 7pm. A big effort will be required from now on as the championship is coming up shortly. The U14's will play on Wednesday evening in Ballyhaise at 7pm, the U16s play on Friday evening and the U12s also play first their first game this weekend (Check fixtures for details)

Seniors
The senior team played Drung in Annalee Park on Friday evening last and had a comfortable win in a rather lacklustre game. Stephen Smith and Kevin Tierney accounted for twelve of Ballyhaise's fourteen points and the other two points were scored by Barry Reilly and Barry McCrudden. Overall it was a good performance by the home team who were missing a lot of regulars and had a very young team on show. The next game is away to Shercock on Saturday at 5.30pm.

Reserves
The Division Two reserve team played Drung on Sunday and drew 1-8 to 1-8 while the Division Three reserve team had a fine win in Bailieborough against the locals on Sunday evening. The final score was Bailieborough 2-8 Ballyhaise 1-13.

U-16
The U-16 team played twice during the past week and unfortunately lost both games. They were beaten by Ballymachugh on Tuesday evening but only by a point in a very tight and tense game. It was as not as close, however, on Sunday when they succumbed to a very strong St. Finbarr's side. Their next game is on the 11th May at home to Laragh at 7.30pm.

Congratulations
Congratulations to senior player Anthony Lyons, Shantemon, and Catherine Campbell, Brookeborough, Co. Fermanagh, were married recently. We wish them many long and happy years together.

Seniors

Reserves
The Division Two reserve game due to be played on Sunday was called off as Kill were unable to field a team while the Division Three reserves suffered their first defeat of the year when they were beaten by Cornafean 3-10 to 2-10.

U-14
The U-14 team lost out narrowly by two points to Killyagarry in the league on Thursday evening. After a bad start the team came into the game well but lost out in the last five minutes. The Scotstown second team played a friendly against Ballyhaise recently in Annalee Park which the home team won after a useful run out for the whole panel. The next game in the league is away to Drumlane on Thursday evening (April 29th).

County U-15 Development Squad
Congratulations to Fiachra McGoldrick and Conor Smith who have been selected on the county development panel

U-16
The U-16 team captured a share of the spoils when they travelled to Crosskeys last Tuesday evening to play Denn. The final score in an exciting game was Ballyhaise 3-13 Denn 4-10. Their next game is against Ballymachugh on Tuesday evening (April 27th) in Annalee Park at 7.15pm.

Ballyhaise Club Notes

21 April 2010

Monthly Club Meeting
The football clubs monthly meeting will take place next Wednesday night (April 21st) in the community centre at 9pm.

Underage Hurling
An underage hurling meeting will take place in the changing rooms this Tuesday night (April 20th) at 9pm.

Seniors
The senior team played Cootehill in the second round of the league in Annalee Park on Sunday and won by six points. A wonderful first half performance left them ahead by twelve points at half time and comfortably on top. A fantastic goal by Colm O'Reilly and some fine points from Kevin Tierney in particular were the highlight of the half. Things were very different in the second, however, as Cootehill came storming back. Thankfully they had left themselves too much to do and were still behind by six points at the end.

Reserves
The Division Two Reserve team had a good win over Cootehill in the curtain raiser on Sunday with a final score of 1-9 to 0-7. David Duggan scored the crucial goal in this game. On Saturday evening the Division Three Reserve team hammered Killinkere by 2-19 to 1-8 to record two wins in two games in Division 3A.

U-14
The U-14 team followed up on their first round win over Castlerahan with a hard earned draw away to Ballinagh. Despite been behind at halftime, against strong opposition, the boys produced some great football to earn a share of the spoils. The star of the game was goalkeeper Jamie Donohoe with some excellent saves. Final score Ballyhaise 3-9 Ballinagh 2-12. This week's game is at home to Killygarry on Thursday evening at 7pm. Support welcome.

U-16
The U-16 team were unfortunate to lose out to Bailieborough by four points last Tuesday evening. It was a very encouraging display against the strong favourites in this division and bodes well for the future. Their next game is against Denn on Tuesday evening in Crosskeys(April 20th) at 7.15pm.

Minors
The minor team were defeated by Cavan Gaels in the last League Division One round robin match of the year. Level at half time, and playing very well, Ballyhaise suffered a unfortunate period of bad luck in the first ten minutes of the second half. Leading player Shane McKiernan sustained a serious injury and shortly afterwards the Gaels were awarded a very dubious penalty to leave them four points ahead. This double blow scuppered Ballyhaise's chance of victory but they can be proud of their competitive performance throughout the league campaign. Hopefully Shane will be back in action in good time for the summer campaign.

Ballyhaise Club Notes

12 April 2010

Seniors
The senior team had their first league outing of the year away to Knockbride last Saturday evening and succumbed to a two point defeat. Knockbride had a man sent off after fifteen minutes but Ballyhaise could not raise their game on the day and were trailing at full time 0-9 to 0-7. The Division Two Reserve team had a comprehensive victory over the same opposition in which they managed to score an impressive seven goals. Five of the Ballyhaise goals in the 7-12 to 1-3 win were scored by Gerry McCrudden.

U-16
Well done to the U-16 team who had a fine win over Drumalee on Friday evening in the first round of the league. Trailing by six points at half-time they put in a tremendous performance in the second half to turn the game on its head and win by five. Their next game is on Tuesday evening against Bailieborough in Annalee Park at 7.00pm.

Minors
The minor team also had a good win over St. Joseph's in the penultimate round of the league. A strong defensive performance in the second half and a penalty save by goalkeeper Darragh Prior were key in a two point victory. The minors play Cavan Gaels in Annalee Park next Saturday 2pm.

Race Night
The clubs fundraising race night has been postponed until sufficient cards have been sold. Members are asked to hold on to unreturned cards and continue to fill. Additional cards are still available. Minors
Ballyhaise played Redbridge in a Minor League Division One match on St. Patrick's Day. The home team won a tight and somewhat dour contest by three points but should have won by much more as they missed a lot of chances in the first half. Shane McKiernan made a welcome return after a long layoff due to appendicitis and contributed three points over the course of the hour. Man of the match Niall Conaty gave a super display and his runs from deep and well taken scores proved crucial in the end.

Unfortunately Ballyhaise's game against St. Joseph's which was due to be played last Sunday morning was postponed when no referee turned up. The game was due to start at 11am and the teams waited on the pitch for nearly forty minutes before returning to the dressing rooms.

Ballyhaise Club Notices

15 March 2010

Congratulations to the staff and students of Castletara National School who hosted a very successful 'Gaelic Games Week' last week. The week included an opportunity for students of the school to play Gaelic games on Breffni Park before the Cavan v Wexford National Football League game on Saturday night.

During the week Tony Scullion, Duirmuid Marsden, Paul Brady and Eddie Brennan of Kilkenny (with the Liam McCarthy Cup) all visited the school. The highlight of the week was the visit of Christy Cooney, President of the GAA and Tom Reilly the Chairman of the Cavan County Board on Friday morning. The students performed music and dance for the invited guests and a large crowd of parents and local club members who were present. Some of the students also read poems they had written for the occasion and a tree was planted in the grounds of the school. Well done to all.

Ballyhaise play Redbridge in a Minor League Division One match on St. Patrick's Day at 12 noon in Annalee Park and also have another home game against St. Joseph's at 11am on Sunday next.

Ballyhaise U-16's took part in the finals of the Christopher Shiels Memorial Tournament on Saturday morning in Breffni Park. They started well with a win over Shercock but bowed out of the competition when they lost to Killygarry. It was, however, a great effort by all the team and their mentors in a top class competition.

A Juvenile Club open day and information day for parents of players will take place on Saturday 20th March.

Coaching dates to look out for: Monday 22nd March - 'Adapting Fun Games' (U8-U12) - Duirmuid Marsden. Monday 29th March - Young referees course for anyone aged 14-18.
